This essay explores how the definition of "anti-Semitism" has evolved from the late nineteenth to the present day. It shows that anti-Semitism, as with any other ideology, has a background, albeit one that is mostly unexplored in this case by concentrating on Europe and America. The essay contrasts early uses of the term, which saw anti-Semitism as a uniquely modern phenomena, with subsequent definitions, which saw anti-Semitism as a persistent and pervasive ailment. The evolution of minority rights and Jews' shifting connection to states were both significant factors in the concept of anti-history.
